I.   Summary




                                                Contrastive Conjunction

                   Connectors are used to connect large groups of words, phrases and sentences. It also can
                   use to link paragraphs to give them coherence. Common contrastive conjunction are : on the

                   other hand, while, whereas, however, nevertheless, still, yet, in spite of, even if, in contrast,
                   by comparison, on the contrary, in any case, unless.

                   On the other hand;while;whereas

                   These expression are used to balance two contrasting ideas that do not contradict each
                   other.
                      •  I like to live in the city, while / whereas my wife prefers the country.

                      •  Electronic gadgets make life easier. On the other hand, they encourage people to
                         be physically inactive.


                   However, nevertheless, still, yet, in spite of this
                   These sentence connectors are used to emphasize the fact that the second point
                   contradicts with the first and it also express contrast or conflict.
                      •  He says that he is a socialist. However, he owns three houses and four luxury cars.
                      •  House prices have gone up this year. In contrast, car prices seem to be stagnating

                      •  There was little chance of success. Nevertheless, we didn’t give up.
                      •  He is rich. Still, he leads a miserable life.


                   Even if
                   Sentence with even if are close in meaning to whether or not. Even if gives the idea that

                   a particular condition doesn’t matter. The result will not change.
                     •  If  Roni studies hard, he will pass the exam.
                         Even if  Roni studies hard, he won’t pass the exam.
