Seven Relative Pronouns
No Relative Pronoun Functions
1 Who (for subject) is generally only for people
Whom (for object) is generally only for people

3 Which for things or situations
4 That In non-defining relative clause, ‘that’ is used for
things. In defining relative clauses (clauses that are
essential to the sentence and don’t simply add
extra information) ‘that’ can be used for things and
people
5 When/on which for times
6 Where/in which for place
Relative pronouns can refers to singular or plural, and there is no difference between male and
female.
Example :
• He is the student who gets the first rank in my class.
• She is the student who gets the second rank in my class.
• They are the students who represent the English debate team.
Two types of relative clause
1. Defining Clauses
We use relative pronoun (who, that, which, whose, and whom) to introduce a
defining relative clause, or a clause to give information that we need to understand what or
who is being refered to. We don’t use commas in defining relative clause. In writing, we
don’t use commas in defining relative clauses.
