                  Tenses                       Explanation
                  Simple Past                  The SIMPLE PAST is used to talk about an activity or situ-
                                               ation that began and ended at a particular time in the past

                                               (e.g., last nigh, last week, three days ago, last year).
                                               a) Agus walked downtown yesterday.
                                               b) I slept for eight hours last night.


                  Past Progressive             The  PAST  PROGRESSIVE  express  an  activity  that  was  in
                                               progress (was occuring, was happening) at a point of time
                                               in the past or at the time of another action (e.g. when Albert
                                               came).
                                               I sat down at the dinner table at 6:00 P.M. yesterday. Al-
                                               bert come to my house at 6:00 P.M.
                                               I was eating dinner when Albert came.

                                               I went to bed at 09:00. The phone rang at 11:00
                                               I was sleeping when the phone rang.

                                               NB
                                               1. When the phone rang, I was sleeping.
                                               2. The phone rang while I was sleeping.
                                               Examples 1 and 2 have the same meaning.
                                               When = at that time; While = during that time
