The shadows of the ships You are beautiful and faded,
Like an old opera tune
Rock on the crest
In the low blue lustre Played upon a harpsichord;
Or like the sun-flooded silks
Of the tardy and the soft inrolling tide.
Of an eighteenth-century boudoir. In your eyes
Smoulder the fallen roses of outlived minutes,
A long brown bar at the dip of the sky
Puts an arm of sand in the span of salt. And the perfume of your soul
Is vague and suffusing,
The lucid and endless wrinkles With the pungence of sealed spice-jars.
Draw in, lapse and withdraw. Your half-tones delight me,
Wavelets crumble and white spent bubbles And I grow mad with gazing
Wash on the floor of the beach. At your blent colors.

Rocking on the crest
My vigor is a new-minted penny,
In the low blue lustre
Which I cast at your feet.
Are the shadows of the ships.
Gather it up from the dust
That its sparkle may amuse you.
